His early life was damaged with rejection that he got, and especially with almost quitting. His comic career was ruined by both his publisher and the World War, which had caused him to give up, because comics were like cartoons of his war experience. His wife Joan saved the Marvel company, by motivating Lee back into the comic business, with him almost giving up.
